We Use The Following Equipment To Rescue and Restore Your Flooded Carpets.
It is quite common for people all over Melbourne to assume that wet carpet drying can be done by themselves using household items. A wet-vac is sometimes hired to remove water from flooded carpets and then normal fans are used to dry the remaining water. Whilst it may seem like the economical choice to dry water damaged carpets in an emergency yourself, basic equipment cannot complete the job properly.
Before exploring the right equipment to use, it is important to explain the process involved in drying water damaged carpets.
The most important step in flood restoration is removing as much excess standing water from flooring such as carpet and timber boards. Interestingly this step often requires the shortest amount of time but still removes most of the water which helps to dry wet carpets. Over the past twenty years we have noticed other restorers neglect this step. Whether due to improper training or pure laziness some restorers simply leave drying machinery whilst ignoring this first major step. This can be a real problem as it will increase the chance of ruining carpets, creating secondary issues such as mould and also extending the drying time. The proper way to complete this step is through deep extraction of water through use of industrial equipment.
The first component of this is the machine that is responsible for extraction of standing water. There are two types. Truck mounted extractors which are more powerful and efficient and portable which are suited for properties that don’t have vehicle access. Both industrial extractors are far better suited than hiring a dry vac which simply will not do the job.
Extraction tools should be considered next. Industrial wands are required to properly extract deep standing water from flooded carpets. A light industrial wand can be used in the initial extraction to remove water from flooded carpets. This can be a good first step as it is less likely to damage wet carpet (flooded carpets lose a lot of strength and are prone to tearing). Hard surface wands are ideal to extract standing water as they have soft surfaces which will not damage the flooring. These are the two main tools used to dry flooded carpets and flooring.
Our practice involves extracting water from flooded carpets multiple times. Often, we will wait for 15 minutes after the first run to allow the carpet to reabsorb moisture from surrounding materials such as sub-flooring and underlay and then extract water again. The goal should always be to have the carpet no more than damp even if the original flood damage has huge amounts of standing water throughout the property.
We cannot stress the importance of this first initial step. Done correctly this will greatly reduce secondary issues resulting from flood damage and shorten the overall drying time.
It must be pointed out that retail equipment available to the public simply has no chance of extracting enough water from flooded materials. Whilst it may be appealing to dry wet carpets yourself it is always wise to hire professionals as in the long run. Often the appeal of saving money will cost you more in the long run as you experience further water damage and higher costs.

Next we will examine water damage restoration machinery and how it is can be used to effectively dry flooded carpets. If the first step was extraction which removed the most amount of water and takes the least amount of time, the residual drying is what removes the remaining moisture and takes much longer.
