We can’t stress this point enough, but mould is not your friend and has no place being in your home. The only time you should even remotely tolerate mould is on a piece of old bread or fruit.
Exposure to mould can pose extremely dangerous risks to your respiratory health and may result in various allergies and medical conditions. Therefore, it is important to ensure your home or office has a clean air environment.
What is mould?
A mould is a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. Sometimes, people get mould confused with fungi which adopt a single celled growth habit which are called yeasts. Fungi, such as mushrooms are edible and do not pose risks to your health (unless they are of the poisonous variety) whereas mould should be eliminated in the first instance.
Why does mould exist?
Mould exists for the sole purpose of decomposing dead organic matter. It can sometimes infect living plants and animals. The spores and fibrous structures of individual mould colonies are much too small to see without a microscope and could even be floating in the very air you are breathing at this moment.
When enough mould accumulates it will start to appear on a surface in various colours. These colours are determined by the nutrient source and age of the mould colony. It is impossible to determine with precision what kind of mould is growing by visual inspection only.
This is why the Kleen-Tech Professionals recommend a search and destroy policy with extreme prejudice.
What makes mould grow?
Mould cannot grow without water. If there is no water, there is no growth. Mould also requires a warm temperature, oxygen and food. Since mould feasts on decomposing organic matter, it can grow on wood. Keep this in mind the next time water seeps underneath your wooden floors. If you don’t act quickly, you can end up with a colony of unwanted friends whose purpose in life it is to release spores into your air.
If that wasn’t bad enough, mould can also digest various synthetic materials such as paints, pastes and even adhesives. Whilst mould can’t feed off of glass, metal or concrete it can grow on debris, dirt or even hairs that live on these surfaces.
What’s important to remember is that mould loves wet or damp materials but can also extract moisture from the air where the environment is overly humid – usually around the 60-65% relative humidity mark. Mould is nature’s opportunist and will grow if it has access to water. So, don’t delay – if you do, it may end up costing you more than just money.
How can I get rid of mould?
The key to eliminating mould in your home or workplace is to cut off the moisture supply. We really can’t stress this enough. If you proactively reduce the ways water accumulates in the building structure, mould won’t continue to be a problem.

How does mould spread?
Mould uses tiny root hairs called hyphae to get around. In addition to extending these tiny hairs, mould makes spores which function as little seeds that are released into the air or water. As mould dries, the rate of release increases exponentially in an effort to spread the seeds to new growth areas.
What are the health risks?
Since mould affects the respiratory system is may cause sneezing, coughing, headaches, fatigue, wheezing and respiratory infections. Young children especially need to be protected as well as the elderly, people with asthma or allergies and individuals with deficient immune systems.
